i've got a lot of different varieties of sweet peas but i don't really have the space to grow them. except for the allotment which is chest high in weeds right now.
can i grow them in grow bags. basically i've got a paved over back yard that has no use. i want to train them up canes like edible peas sowed in grow bags....is that possible do you think?
no idea (as mine were in the ground this year and took over like triffids) but worth a shot. Just keep em well fed and watered I would imagine.
;D
I used to show sweet peas about 10 years ago and the prep of the beds was essential. A good deep digging and manuring so that the roots could get down. If I were you I would try some of the old fashioned sweet peas as they are a lot smaller but none the less just as beautiful and of course they smell better, You could try them growing up a wigwam in a pot. Hope that you are successful whatever you decide
awww thanks you guys :)
yea i think i have some old fashioned ones aswell so i'll give them a shot.
has to be said that the bed mine were in, was virgin compost with a tonne of other newly imported this year goodies so they were very well fed and the ground was very well dugover.
i'll remember that next year.
;D
Sweet peas prefer a deep root run - I think you'd be better off emptyomg the growbags into big pots and growing your plants that way. Would look prettier, too :)
Next year I'm going to grow living shading for my greenhouse by growing sweetpeas in deep troughs round it, and the soil will be growbag soil....neat idea, eh? 8)
how much sun do they need ? i'm thinking of putting them the arch side of No. 1. i've only needed limited shading this year and my SPs have been out for months !
oh and brill idea, don't mind if i pinch it do you ?
:D
Feel free..... :P ;)
Last year I planted them along with the climbing beans and they were gorgeous. Didn't get my act together this year, and am now wondering whether 2006's smaller harvest may be partly because I had extra pollinating insects visiting last year for the sweet pea-French/runner bean combi.
*makes note to add sweet peas to veg seed purchases for next year*
triffid, if there's a Wyvale GC near you - get them now. 25p a packet. Bought mine yesterday 8)
i wish a had a wyevale near me. *sigh*
oh well!
but yes thanks for the help guys. i'll probably grow them in pots in that case.
Cavalry to the rescue!
Have PM'd you :)
bless yer heart!
