Ever since Windows update 26/8, when i try to Download photos from my digital Camera, it fails. Its a Nikon Coolpix 4300 camera and i`m using Picasa 2 ( google software) It still fails, if i reload Nikon software-ie driver.I really don`t want Nikon software, prefer Picas2 software. Is Picasa 2 Plug & play and if it is why won`t it download my photos-- have reloaded Picasa 2
I have ben suspicious/wary of windows update for some time. Some of them i think are unnessesary (particularly if you have seperate firewall/antivirus/spyware software on your PC), they can conflict with other programs, bung up your hard drive and generaly slow the PC down.
This is not to say they are all like this, some are OK and usefull (the challenge is know which is which!). This Is why I have my windows update aplet set only to notify rather than auto install. So i can check what i ma getting before its installed. It drives my Norton Internet Security 2006 program potty though, it keeps telling me i have 'Issues affecting my status', basicaly means it'd rather my windows updates were automaticaly installed. But i dont care because i preer to be in charge of my computer rather than the computer being in charge of ME!
whne you plug your camera in via usb im assuming it shows up in my computer as a removable mass storage device
if it does doubble click on the device and just go through the folders untill you come accross your pics then try and copy + past them to a new folder on oyur desktop or somewere
Iggy,
Not showing as `Removable Mass Storage Device`. Camera & lead ok on another Computer.
In that case its not a software issue its a problem with your usb ports
Try putting the camera in another usb port or try inserting another usb device.
------------
Right click my computer / left click properties/hardware /device manager
does usb device manager show up at the bottom of the list? Does it have an red X or a Yellow ! next to it? If so remove the USB device (right click delete) and reboot the PC which will re-insert the usb drivers. Sometimes this happens when windows updates generic USB drivers but your PC is using drivers supplied by the motherboard manufacturer.

Glow 777-- Thanks for help. Have gone to D/Manager,have gone to bottom of list, no yellow or red markings.
At bottom is has Universal serial bus controllers, in this tree it has 5 Usb root hub,4 standard uni pci to usb host controller, 1-standard enhanced pci to usb host controller.
If it helps, have just updated Tom Tom for updates via USB all ok,looks like it just won`t except camera via USB--have tried different usb`s have `4`.
I know camera & cable are ok ,have tried it on son in laws computer all ok.
Any other ideas, before I trot down the Computer shop.
Thanks Peter
Does the camera have a CD with it, containing 'drivers' for the camera so that windows can recognise it? Whilst Windows XP (I assume you have this) will recognise a new usb device when you connect it, it wont know exactly what the device is or how to 'talk' to it. Installing the drivers from the CD or perhaps from the camera manufacturers website will allow it to this. It doesnt matter if you did this when you first got the camera, sometimes after installing subsequent programs and update patches things like peripheral device drivers (like a camera) need to be reinstalled to make them work properly again.
Sometimes the Software that comes with a digital camera includes uploading software. This is often the best thing to use to upload pictures to the PC, although its quite easy to do it using windows XP itself (I often use this method).
Let me know how you get on or if you need more help.
Garden cadet/ Iggy--anybody.
Thanks for replys, have loaded camera drivers and get Welcome to xp set up wizard --setup error Q317181 which says `setup has detected Service pack or the system installed is NEWER than the update (update ?) you are applling to it, you can only install this update on computer with no Service pack installed --- FRIGHTENED TO UNINSTALL SERVICE PACK.--have Norton installed.
The reason I didn`t install driver before is, because I thought it was plug * play and Picasa2 would detect it ? ?
Will uninstalling this Service Pack 2 cause lots of problems ? ? or will it be just a matter of unistall / reinstall with no problems and be ok-- WHAT WOULD YOU DO ? ? --- thanks PETE
You shouldnt have to uninstall service pack 2, and to be honest i wouldnt recomend it, since you dont know what other applications (perhaps installed since you got SP2?) may need it and cause problems without sp2. Plus your Norton will scream at you that your windows is out of date!
Does sound like you have a bit of a problem there. Which driver are you trying to (re)install, the one that came with the camera? If you have had the camera some time it could be out of date and thats what is causing the conflict. You could try the manufacturers website so see if they have an up to date driver for your camera and try that. it might be more compatible with Windows XP SP2.
Other than that its a windows problem (surprise! surprise! ::)). Perhaps if its the specific update thats the problem then that update and that alone will have to be removed. Thats assuming it all worked fine before the update was installed (and you say it was). Windows updates CAN be removed safely if you do it properly. Go to the 'Add/Remove programs section in Control Panel, and check the box at the top 'Show Updates' This will bring up all the windows updates in addition to your installed programs. Find the correct one and click remove. it will ask you if you are sure and warn you against it but continue past this to uninstall the update. Make sure you are certain of the name and number of the update you think has caused the problem first and take off that one ONLY. Reboot the PC as prompted. You could try the camera there and then but i would advise taking off the camera driver and reinstalling it before trying the camera again. Uninstall the driver correctly and you should have no problems.
If you have any queries with this advice please post back before taking any action. If the above doesnt work, then i am afraid you will have to ask someone else because i cant think of anything else to try!
Thanks for Info, Garden Cadet
Regards Peter
Happy to help
BTW: Just had a look for your camera on the Nikon website - I couldnt find a Coolpix 4300! All sorts of other 'Coolpix' cameras but not that one - even in the 'discontinued' range. You sure its a 4300? Its just that i am curious about the camera you have.
EDIT: Have looked a bit deeper and found it. Nice camera.
I have a Fuji Finepix f455. 5MP plus optical and digital zoom . Very compact but takes great pictures. Had it about 14 months. Never had any 'computer issues' with it.
It may be worth you considering purchasing a camera card reader, they are very cheap these days and saves connecting you camera to the computer, whic in turn saves the batteries in the camera
Yes I would agree with that. A card reader would be usefull in such a situation. Might avoid all the conflict and software problems that can arise between cameras and PCs. (as seen above).
I am lucky with my camera. It came with a 'cradle' which not only serves as a charger but is also used to connect to the PC and upload the photos, So I dont have to turn the camera on and drain the battery just to upload photos. I just put the camera on the cradle press a button on the cradle and the camera is connected to the PC (usualy!) So I have not needed a card reader, although my printer has a card reader, and my new desktop pc has a card reader, so could do if I wanted to! Practicaly though it is easier to pop the camera in the cradle and press the button than get the card out of the camera.
Geting back to the problem in hand i did still need to install a driver and software to make the PC recognise the camera!
Garden Cadet -- Many thanks,
Went to local computer shop -- half hrs work-- £25,seemed ok at shop, but from a new icon created on desktop--not how it was before, but when at home, my Tom Tom software is in contact with Uplift of Photos.I am returning to shop Wednesday AM.- Cheesed off-- All this trouble has been brought about thro` Reloading XP Home --3wks ago by same Computer shop. They reloaded it because Computer had a Virus, which was making Computer shut down after 4 minutes and ZONE ALARM didn`t stop it. So don`t use Zone Alarm, use Norton, which I am now using --Regards pntalbot ( peter )
Zone Alarm is a firewall, not an antivirus. Although they do an antivirus program. You should always run both.
BTW, Norton is not a particularly good antivirus program any longer, If you really want the best, use Kaspersky or F-Secure. I used to use Norton, but even the free AVG antivirus has better detection rates nowadays (www.free.grisoft.com) .
Be careful what you tell people.

I am confused now. Is this still to do with the camera problem, or are you having other problems as well? Have you tried the steps i told you about? Are you saying that your PC thinks your sat nav is your camera and vice versa? I thought it was a windows update that started all this off, not a virus?
You havent made yourself very clear my friend.
Robinof the hood,
Please note I had been using zone alarm -firewall & antivirusoftware.
by the sounds of it the virus you had was sasser worm i find it remarkable that they reinstaled your pc because of it.
obviously a pretty poor tech shop ]
99% of all viruses can be gotton shot of with no ill after effects for the pc
norton and mcaffee tend to be targeted the most by many viruses as that is what many businesses use
how much did the pc shop charge you for norton or did u purchase yourself?
Iggy
Norton Internet 2006 was £59.95
