Title: Swan Gourd
Post by: Mrs Ava on August 26, 2006, 11:45:39
Does anyone know if these are edible or will they be yuck?  I have several growing nicely and some sites hint at them being edible, others say they are purely ornamental.  If purely ornamental, this urchins will have fun carving them on halloween!

Hi EJ  :)

I have some squash that look like patty pans, (F: petite pain?) but with not quite so pinched edges. I have loads off one plant so I picked one extremely early in the season.

Back home I found the skin was like wood even though it was young. Even the lower layers of skin were too tough to eat.
I was able to cut it in half and scoop out the seeds, roast the halves wrapped in foil then fill the middles with cheese sauce like little boats on a bed of spinach. I really enjoyed it.

But it seems that the extremely hard skin means its a gourd and not considered food so I haven`t eaten any more. I think I will harvest them for hallowe`en. The peeling was hard work, if I was to eat another I`d cook it in the skin.

Try it and see its probably not poisonous  ;D Col

Post the results here then we can see if you survive the taste test.

...... Alas here lies poor EJ she tasted a gourd .. Oh Gawd.
It had skin like wood but it tasted ... so Good
It wasn`t a squash ... My Gosh  :o
