Title: How do you get the lids off Kilner jars?
Post by: supersprout on August 24, 2006, 08:50:42
Well, that's it really! Don't laugh :'(
Tried to open one of my Kilner jars of mirabelles yesterday and the lid is still firmly clamped on. Tugged the little rubber tongue with pliers and tore it off, whacked it on the counter top, ran hot water over the top, and it's still not budging >:(

Is there a Method please ??? :-[

Heat? Unclamp the lid, stick it in a saucepan with some water in the bottom, and put it on the heat. I t can't do any harm, and as the contents expand, it might well force the top open.

...while standing well clear??

Know the problem - with Le Parfait jars. Try the Kilner method instead - slip a round 'pointed' knife in between lid & washer. 'Glove' your left hand in case you skid!!

Thank you! Will try all methods on stubborn lids - at least I have more options! :D
