I have just upgraded my PC. It includes a DVD Writer, but i havent got any Recordable DVDs
I need to make a recovery disk for the PC which requires a recordable DVD (or 11 CD -Rs!), so am looking to get some DVD disks in order to do this. Trouble is i am a bit confused at the different types/makes there are. I know i dont want a DVD RW but apart form that i havent much idea. The main difference seems to be between 'DVD+R' and 'DVD-R'. I dont know what the difference is or which one is best for using on a PC (rather than a DVD player). The other issue is make/brand. i would like to know what is a good brand to go for.
Can anyone advise me please?
It depends on your dvd writer. if it will take + or - then it doesn't matter whether you get dvd-r or dvd+r. To check this most dvd writers have a symbol on the front tell you.
As for the brand, it's really whatever you feel comfortable with as most branded are pretty much the same. I have been using unbranded discs for some time and have no complaints, however if you are going to use unbranded discs make sure they are ritek G04 or G05 dye
Hope this helps
Basically + and - are two different standards. Just like VHS and BETA with videos. There hasn't yet been a defining standard so machines play/read both.
It doesn't matter which you use as your machine will read and write both, as will nearly 100% of all PC drives . However I would say use DVD + as this seems to be the standard that is going to be the most used and is more often used on single standard machines eg DVD players that plug into the TV
I find that ALDI is a cheap source of disks. DVD - disks are slightly cheaper again this is because they are losing the standards battle and suppliers may be offloading.

BTW the difference between + and - is the magnetic charge. The discs are magnified and data is stored in binary form (0's and 1's) unaltered they are 0 magnetised they are 1. In DVD + systems they are magnetised with a positive charge in - systems a negative charge
Right back to asking silly gardening questions
Thanks. I have just had a look at the drive. it has bothe plus and minus symbols on it so i guess it can do both.
I will prbably go for 'plus' DVDs since these seem to have higher speed and capacity to the 'minus' types.
I dont want that many disks so i expect to go for the most affordable.
Thanks again
