We have grown Japanese onions before but always from sets.We understand that if you grow them from seed they keep longer. We were going to grow them in individual pots but the packet says sew them straight into the ground. Has anyone got any experience of growing them from seed.

Yes, and they were very successful. Just sow thinly in rows asap! You can use the thinnings later as spring onions :)

I am multi-sowing mine in modules this year but have sowed them directly in the soil before, they are very easy

I think I may try some sewn straight into the ground a some in pots. if they all come good then I can always give some to my Tracy.
Iv'e changed the pic on my posts. That was taken on Saturday up at her new plot

I sowed mine about 2 weeks ago and they have started sprouting - directly onsite btw! Fingers crossed

Has anyone got any japanese onion seeds for a swop please ;D I have never sown any and would like to grow them on my allotment which I will be getting in about four weeks. I will put them into trays and then thin out direct into the ground.

I have mainly flower seeds to swop (my list was on swap list in Jan / Feb this year - let me know. ???

would have done!! I let a few of mine go to seed - were nearly ready to pop when Manuel decided to practice his golf swing on them and sent them flying! was not happy! >:(

he got a proper telling off, he did not realise I had left them for a reason!

Are there any types of Red onion that can be sown now as seed rather than sets?

I've always planted sets in the spring for both red and white onions, but I never seem to have great success, they never seem to get very big, so I thought I might try growing from seed some overwintering onions. Hopefully I'll have more success with them!
