Title: Vandals..... them darned wildlife.... ambrosia sweetcorn that was!
Post by: tilts on August 16, 2006, 21:29:39
Got to the lottie tonight, anxious to continue watering as it is the allotment show on Saturday to find that the vandals have arrived on my plot.
I was pretty smug last week when i saw the neighbours sweetcorn eaten, but today/last night they have been eating mine.
I grew 'Ambrosia' from seed donated from A4all swap shop, today the majority of it was shredded.  I have set up an armed fence and hpefully will have a couple of ears for Saturday.

:( Sorry to hear that :( I presume you mean vermin, ??? would it be worth trying the 2ltr pop bottle idea that was mentioned on here?.

I have strapped some plastic bottles on my corns in the hope that it will keep the buggers at bay as they beat me to it last year and nearly ate the lot. >:(

So sorry to hear that tilts.I saw that the same has happened to my neighbours patch when I was lottying today. Could not believe the destruction - all the stems broken over, and the cobs completely stripped of everything - just naked on the stalks  :o Think on our site it is probably squirrels. I would cry if it happened to mine, must start collecting bottles!

;D Sorry I mis-read that post and used 2ltr Schweppes (Diet) ;D plastic pop bottles ::) and put a Stanley knife up the length and sliced off about 2" below the screw cap, then wrapped the plastic bottle around the cob squeezing the cap end tightly around the base of the cob and holding it with sellotape, string may be a better idea in case rain makes the tape disintrigrate.

Cosmetically may look better being smaller and less noticeable if you remove the label ;D
