Title: At least something is cropping well !
Post by: Curryandchips on August 15, 2006, 16:43:38
After so many crop failures due to the weather, it is warming to notice that my tomatoes are coming in thick and fast. Just picked the first of my plum tomatoes today, roma and san marzano, and I think these may get dried in the oven. In addition, I have Alicante, Golden Sunrise, Tigerella, and Gardener's Delight. Currently, I am picking a standard seed tray full every two days... currently, I have two trays in the kitchen, groaning under tomatoes  :D

Not that I am complaining, just thinking of all the ways to process them ...

I've got loads of toms but they're all green  :'( :'( (bit like my plums) ;) Think I should pick some to ripen indoors pour encourager les autres?

I am tending to pick mine just as they are ripening, knowing that they will turn as I use them. Other than that, I do enjoy tomatoes with a bit of acid bite ...

Mine are coming in thick and fast. Mostly Clear Pink Early, Taxi, Prima and Nadja so far, with some of the others not far behind. CPE is the heaviest cropper at the moment.

Ate my first ferline this morning. GD are still all green but spreading around ferociously as I am trying out NOT picking off sideways shoots this year. When does blight strike? I have planted these on a new allotment 5 miles from the old one where I had to give up on tomatoes because of blight.

I think i can remember blight appearing towards the end of August, but I keep no records, so could be wrong. Since it is a fungus (Phytophthora infestans), it benefits from warm and moist conditions. Weather conditions have been unusual this year, so it could appear any time. My neighbour has spotted some traces of potato blight at the end of his plot (the furthest end from me).

I had blight at around that time last year. Can do without it this time!

Yes, all our gardens are watching on a daily basis, I will harvest a massive crop of green tomatoes when it happens.
