Title: We are going to grow our own! All new to this lark!
Post by: mrsnesbitt on August 15, 2006, 12:17:12
Although I have been a member for a while here I haven't really posted much.
I do know some names from other forums but the situation we are in is total novices.
We have lived in our house for 15 years and are fortunate in having a paddock in our plot...which we are digging over!

It is great to have a place to ask questions and see others setting out too.
I am keeping a record of all we do in a blog , so do feel welcome to have a look and make any suggestions.

Yesterday was a great day, made a compost site! YIPPEE!!!!!!

A very important start - somewhere to put all the things that you dig up and don't want to keep.

If you can't love compost you are on the wrong site... we have four bins from recycleworks, excellent but expensive and a huge one at the back of the bottom allotment made from two sections of Anderson Shelter!.. it is about 8' deep, 6' tall and 5' wide... now we have to psych our selves up to turn it!
;D

I have six council subsidised darliks and still want more.  You just can't have enough compost.

Hi all, Today I`m up to four daleks.  :D

I got a green dalek from a freecycle post. I collected it on my home-built bike trailer.

And cycled round the ring road with it bouncing along behind. (Actually I cycled on the pavement, but under the circumstances ...) It gave the truck drivers something to look at.

How green is that?

Good Luck with your veggies!  I am sure that you will enjoy growing your own grub, it is amazing how addictive it all becomes.
This site has been a great source of info, and great for the winter months when you can't get onto the plot.
A great site for picking up 'free' bit for the plot:  www.dontdumpthat.com .  Many of use are good recyclers, I even saw on add on one recycling site offering peelings to someone who had a compost bin... you didn't answer it did you?!!!! ;)

Shirley. Blimey, looks like I may be thrown off this site ;D Haven't got a compost heap, I only have a small garden and I would be worried in case I got vermin. I do however recycle in to the appropriate council bins. I do also have a supply of horse manure via granddaughters horse (Phoebe)

Oops, silly me!  Along with all the blackberries we inherited, I forgot to mention the well rotted compost heap!  Will hopefully need it soon when we get all this promised rain, and we can dig it in!  Have had a free darlek from the council at home for years, and found two on the plot, so going to use those for leafmould.
I assume it'll be ok to do that. (Another novice at this allotment game, as you know).

Lorna I wouldn't have a compost bin at home cos I haven't got the room and apart from that All my stuff goes up to the plot. If I had a spare corner out of the way I might think of having one. Those plastic ones wouldn't attract the vermin as much as the open pallet ones i don't think. We go and collect our horse muck for free but its a trek across a field and you can only manage two bags a time on the wheelbarrow so its pretty tiring for us oldies. Last time went we managed to get 6 bags but it was bloomin good stuff, Tony and I are going over to Tracy's plot on Saturday to give her a hand. Will take the camera and get some pics

If you enjoy digging ... if you don't, just spread it over the planting areas, nice and thick, and the worms will work for you from now til spring :)

Yes, with considering supersprout's mulching method, I think my compost heaps might become redundant ...  ;D
