Although I have googled I haven't been able to find much choice! I am looking for small shrubs, bulbs etc that will like free draining sandy soil in a north facing garden. Anyone got the same conditions, or could at least give me some ideas please? The plot is only 12 feet by 9 feet approx.
I have a north facing border (well actually it's a path coverered in pots) and I grow a number of perennials in it successfully. I don't have sandy soil though, so perhaps you could improve it by adding lots of well rotted compost and leaf mould? I'd recommend Alchemilla Mollis, Aquilegias, Bergenia, Box, Lily of the Valley, Dicentra, Ivy, Hellebores, Honesty biennial), Bay Laurel and Primulas. Good luck.

Have you thought of purchasing a cd rom for this type of search. Have a look at www.complete-garden.co.uk. I am just about to order it.
Thank you for a list of plants Georgie, most useful.
Lazy Daisy, I hadn't given a CD Rom a thought, but will go and look at the link now, thank you.

Most spring bulbs will be happy. Other things I find do fine in my north-facing, sandy-on-top-of-builders'-rubble garden are hypericum hidcote, spirea, forsythia, japanese anemone, lily of the valley, foxgloves, and scabious.
