Title: Fuschia Fruits
Post by: gardenqueen on August 13, 2006, 22:52:34
Wasn't sure whether to post this here on on the edible threads!  :-\

Anyway, has anyone here ever eaten the fruits /seed heads of Fuschias. If so, are there only certain varieties you can eat, and how do you eat them-raw?

I have never tried, but I thought you pickled them in brine, like capers.....

You can make jam out of them, although I don't have a recipe. They're rather juicy, so I'm not sure that they'd pickle well, EJ - not heard of that being done, anyway.

Hi, I've eaten them and, frankly, they didn't taste of much but then it may have been the variety.  They might be better cooked as well but I wouldn't bother with them raw.

Cheers, Iain

Mmmmmm! Maybe I won't try eating one raw then Iain!  :-\ It was just that I have missed some deadheading and found a lot of  these rather plumptious looking fruits.

Not keen on capers Emma, but will certainly look up a jam recipe Rosa.

Apparently Bob Flowerdew is trying to get people to do a trial of different varieties to see which produce the best fruit.. There's something about it on the Gardeners' Question Time website. Apparently some of them are quite tasty..

..but I'll admit, I'm still wary of trying them!
