Title: Crinum Jumbo Hybrids
Post by: Deeds on August 12, 2006, 12:34:33
I have been sent a large batch of seeds of these beauties, if anyone would like some please message me.

They are the result of several years of hard work by a dedicated American plantswoman, and I belive this is the first time they have been sent out of the States.

You can see them here.http://crinum.iconx.com/html/marcelleshybrids.html (http://crinum.iconx.com/html/marcelleshybrids.html)

Please note: they haven't been tested for hardiness in the UK, so I can't be sure they will survive outdoors without protection everywhere, and would benefit being grown in a frost free place, at least while they are babes so I would like some feedback on how they do.

My book says these plants are pest and disease free and often scented so I can't resist.  PM on its way.   ;D

PM sent. How should the seed be handled? Does it need stratifying or anything?

Hi Deeds.  I potted up the six seeds you sent me (carefully following the detailed instructions).  They are currently in the mini greenhouse and so far only one has shown signs of growth and it is currently looking like a demented spring onion.  Is this normal?

Only one of mine came up, and that sat without growing for a while, then died of what looked like damping off. When I checked (a while ago now) the others seemed to be OK, but showed no signs of producing shoots.

Pergectly normal Georgie.

Robert don't know what the problem is - none of mine have damped off, they are growing away really well at the moment with more popping up daily.

Don't forget many bulb seeds will only start growing at the time when the parent bulbs start, so don't give up on them yet.

My mind's gone blank - there's a type of germination where the seed leaves don't emerge, and nothing happens above ground until the first true leaf emerges. I was wondering whether they were a case in point. Probably not if yours are already growing strongly. But I'm far from giving up!

Another one's popped up now. Let's hope they keep going! If I get a couple to maturity, that alone should be enough to ensure another generation.

Hi Deeds,

Only just seen this thread. The flowers look superb - just the sort my OH likes. Do you think it's too late to have a go now? I've a nice sunny windowsill and a greenhouse to move them in to if they take.

I think what went wrong with mine was that I left them in the mini greenhouse too long; the temperature probably dropped a bit too low. The one that's come up now is growing away much more strongly than the first.
