If you are ever in any doubt about growing your pumpkins and squashes upwards, then check out these pics. We took them whilst on our hols at the Parc Jardins Du Monde in Royan (www.jardins-du-monde.com). They called it a curcabit passage. There were pumpkins, melons, cucumbers and squashes of all shapes and sizes hanging within the pergola. Put mine to shame!!

oh wow, thank you for sharing that with us. This was the first time I've grown butternut squash (seeds coming from a farm shop squash) and it's taking over the garden (not the allotment for this one). It's spread onto the lawn, over the path and has confused the dog. I love butternut squash but even I am going to be hard pushed to use all of these. This would be a good idea to use for next year in training it up some south facing ugly fencing. thanks ;D

I have grown Veg Spag up a runnerbean cane affair... but the weight of the fruit always looked dangerous so I have since sprawled... back to the drawing board I think!!!

Someone else on my site once grew it up some fairly stout poles arranged in a wigwam, and it worked.
Not quite a tunnel, more like a bit of trellis, but it works.
If growing up supports, do the fruit need supporting once they start getting heavy? I'd be worried about them breaking the stems.
They do look great though, and I would definitely like to try growing some up supports next year as I'm finding it hard stepping between my plants withough treading on the fruit!
Not needed to support them yet and they are nearly full grown.

I`ve gathered strong metal supports for a runner bean fence for cucumbers. (Thats a cucumber fence then ;D) I`m going to make a trench
this autumn as I do for beans and grow cucumbers straight up a fence from the outset next year.
This years cucumbers have spread and climbed over every suport I have put in reach. Some are going over the top of my fruit cage. I have struggled to keep them contained in a sensible way. The ones that are able to hang are much better quality than ones that rest on the ground or push up against a support.
The squash in your pictures are much tidier than any of mine, I need to plan ahead.
