Title: Seaweed as a fertiliser
Post by: Doris_Pinks on August 09, 2006, 10:50:35
Wen't to the beach and bought some back, thinking of my compost heap, was looking up what to do with it, and found this which I thought was quite interesting!

Mine will  now be used as a mulch!

It is indeed wonderful stuff - but boy oh boy does it pong!!

At the beginning of the summer a farmer collected loads of the stuff off Marazion beach and put it in large heaps in his fields... Pooooooooohhhhhhhhhh for weeks after you had to close your windows when driving past.

I was thinking of collecting some for putting on my veg patch - but thought again  -  I don't think my neighbours would be too happy!

I'm thinking of collecting some in supermarket carriers since I'm only 5 minutes from a beach. I thought I would then tip the lot into a trench and bury it for a few weeks before using as a mulch - or would this defeat the purpose and it would still pong?

If I can get any, it goes straight onto the garden as mulch too, asparagus gets first dibs, then cabbage, then everything else ;D Oh for carrier bags full tricia! Laid fresh, I find it hath no pong - I prefer to mulch over it asap though to keep it moist, it's like a gel and can retain moisture well under e.g. hay or straw provided it doesn't dry out ::)

Excellent info DP

Now all I need to do is find me some - all the beaches round here are lovely and sandy with none in sight!
