Does one ever allow enough room?
These are just 2.
Daughter originally had them 2' apart!!

Yes and then one dies off and you are left with an embarassing gap for a couple of weeks!
;D

If they ever had enough room, you'd have to call them "just right" instead of "squash". ;)

I grow mine in amongst my climbing beans and sweetcorn, as there is plenty of ground space for them to roam.

This year I am growing pumpkin-hundredweight (again-4 plants), and two varieties of winter squash - cobnut (one plant), and bonbon (given me by a neighbour-one plant). They all appear to be setting fruit, so we shall see ...

Bully for you, tippytoes!!

I can't even walk through one bush, let alone a bush/corn complex. Need a photo.

Now that is a good idea.

I can't claim it for my own though Mike, as it is a variant on the three sisters method. Since my beans and sweetcorn were grown next to each other, I just planted the squashes in amongst them.

i am doing the same thing and it is working well for the squashes and the corn. the climbing beans got sown rather late and are struggling to find the light, but they are not my main climbing bean crop so any i get will be a bonus.  you are right Tim, you cant walk through the bed but in my case the bed is small and easily accessed from all sides.  in a space 2 meters by three meters i have 12 corn plants and three squash plants. the corn is doing great this way (maybe the weather is helping) and there are about three cobs per plant.

I have just taken this pic this afternoon. I have been trying to grow my squash up a frame, but they are still sprawling quite a lot.  :) busy_lizzie
