Just had a VERY helpful chat with 'the chap' who knows. Asked about the time limit for keeping it on plants. Seemed strange?
In short - & he will be mailing me later - & this is subject to modification after that -
1. The advice applies only to FINE mesh.
2. Reason? In trials, SOME plants, in SOME conditions, got diseased because of the lack of ventilation.
3. We use the FINE mainly against Flea Beetle. For Brassica, this pest is only a real problem in the seedling stage. This means that one needs only a modest amount of mesh ( my view) to cover.
4. For ROCKET etc - quick growing & not susceptible to disease. And needs only small amounts of mesh.
5. The advice, in any case, is purely cautionary.
Does that help??
Big help Tim, Thanks, I've got loads of nibbles on my brassicas, and wasn't sure ref covering with mesh, ie. how long etc.
Please give us any more info when available
Kathi :D
mmm yes, flea beetle. Grumble, etc. The reason I've kept my fine mesh over is because the seal at the bottom of the Geoff H cloche has also managed to keep out a lot of snails, the larger slugs and of course the pigeons. And the supports mean some ventilation anyway. And I've got clean cabbages with hardly any holes (compared with the conventionally meshed summer white cabbs which look like colanders!)
Next year the whites get it too...
Interesting comments!
