Title: peanuts!
Post by: moonbells on August 04, 2006, 09:33:25
OK here's an edible I didn't expect!  ;D ;D

Last night I saw something growing in one of my daffodil tubs, and on closer inspection turned out to be a peanut that the tree rats have planted for me!  ;D ;D

Do they grow to full size in the UK and if so, how on earth do you tell? It's only about 6" high at the moment and I only worked out what it was because of the husk...

in one of the old GH books he suggests planting only in warm areas or at least somewhere that can be kept warmish although peanuts can stand a slight frost - they like light but rich soil - sow in spring, earth the plants up when they are 15cm tall, mulch with grass cuttings or compost and stop watering when they begin to flower - 5 months after sowing dig up the whole plant, dry the roots off in the sun and remove the peanuts - I take it you don't like squirrels  :)

They're OK in the pot, if you can get enough of them.

Squirrels or peanuts ?!!! ;D ;D

I have no idea when this one was planted (the squirrel forgot to make a label ;) ) so I guess I'll just be leaving it there until the first frosts!
