Japanese technique for square melons:
wooden boxes with clear sides are placed around the growing fruit which
naturally swells to fill the surrounding shape

I've had square tomatoes before, and of course straight cucumbers, both done by a similar method - each to their own I suppose, but have always thought that the more mis-shapen the fruit or veg the better the taste! ;D

My daughter was given a square tomato kit and we have the little plasssy box at the ready to go around a young tom - just have to remember to take it to the plot and get it over a tommy!
I like that, much easier to cut! :)
