I am a total novice with onions (and most veg) ::) and would like some advice please. :)
I pulled these Japanese onions recently and they look a bit unappetising, the two to the left have blown their skins and the right has rot and is a little soft in the dark patch, are they edible? ???

How about these thick stemmed Jap onions are they ok to eat? ??? I presume these have bolted ??? I hate wasting food and even more so if I have grown it myself. ;D
Many thanks in advance,
Roy.

Those are perfectly OK. The thick-stemmed ones have, as you suggest, bolted. Most of my spring-planted onions did this year. They won't keep, but as far as I know the 'burst' ones will keep as normal.
Bursting might be the result of irregular water supply - a good downpour will cause the inner leaves to swell up and pop the outer ones if there's been a dry spell beforehand ???
Yes Jim ;) why?
You maybe right Jim, I was waiting until the leaves fopped over and started turning brown, they flopped over but didn't show any brown so I pulled em end of July. :-\
