Title: Which Squash?
Post by: barkingdog on August 01, 2006, 08:51:56
Hi all,

I'd like to know which squash varieties everyone considers to be the best, in terms of flavour, productivity etc.

I'm growing them for the first time and I'm growing Early Butternut, Buttercup, Red Kuri, Sweet Dumpling & Crown Prince.

I look forward to your replies... ;D

my top 2 would be all the patty pans and all the butternuts and coming in third would be the 'turk's turban' but then there's all the other amazing colours, sizes, funny shaped ones - very difficult to choose.

I like Crown Prince or whatever it's called. It's a steel blue pumpkin with loads of lovely orange flesh inside. But patty pan and buttnernut are also great.

I'm going to cheat - with my top three:

Hubbard group (inc Blue Hubbard)
Australian Blue group (inc Crown Prince)
Delicata group (inc Honey Boat Delicata)

i tried patty pans from a local grower, to see if i would like them. i didnt! i find i dont like summer squashes after all, apart from cucumbers and courgettes.

Crown Prince stores really well, sorting out the shed for the new season found one still sound!
Vif Rouge D'Etampes Orange and ribbed as per Villandry but doesnot always do the business as it likes it a bit warmer!
Avoid Fester it is really productive and early but no taste!
;D
