Title: Onions not growing
Post by: EmmaLou on July 31, 2006, 21:41:27
I planted some onion sets last autumn, but they don't seem to have grown and the leaves have shrunk away. I also planted some others earlier in the year - a few have swelled nicely, but the majority haven't done much. Are they destined for the compost, or can I rescue them?

My over winter ones were a disaster but the summer ones grew well enough just a timing thing... got them out of the cells and in the soil just before a cool damp fortnight in may then they were well rooted for the hot dry bit!

Hi EmmaLou
I have had the same problem  - i plant onions and they don't really grow, the foliage just dies back. It turns out I have white rot and this is what happens sometimes. The few overwintered onions that did grow are ok, although some show the rot now while they are stored (white mold with black specks). I didn't realize I have rot until I planted garlic and it was covered in the white mold when I went to lift it last month, as my onions didn't show signs of the mold when lifting them this year or last.
I hope this problem isn't yours....

good luck,
um

Some of my onions failed to grow, even my summer ones, but they are trying to grow in fine dust.
