Had my first harvest of the year last night.
drumroll...
we had pasta with a tomato, olives and garlic sauce (all that lot shop bought), with homegrown oyster mushrooms and parsley off last year's plants.
(small voice - there were a total of seven mushrooms, about two inches long, with not much of a 'cap'!)
I hope the rest of my harvests will be better!
Well done Aquilegia, drum roll indeed. You clever girl. How does one go about with growing mushrooms. I like shitake mushrooms all dry up and wrinkly. I believe they taste best that way.But thats my preference anyway.
I meant shitake mushrooms. You must be wondering what am I on about.
Xanadu - I bought a straw kit from Suttons. It was rather pricey and from the results so far I wouldn't bother again.
You can also get dowels to put into logs, or even logs with dowels in already. It's expensive too, but you can apparently get crops for several years. I might try some shiitakes like that next year.
have a look at http://www.mycologue.co.uk/
(the censors don't like that mushroom name - it's got two 'I's in it anyway, I've just discovered!)
Thanks Aquilegia, for that explanation was trying to figure out why the name appears weird. Thanks for the link too, will check it out.
We picked the first of our rhubarb yesterday. 7 stalks. Mum made a lovely crumble from it. Mmmm! ;D
mmm rhubarb crumble. my favourite. I can't wait to harvest the first rhubarb (only planted it last year) but the local cats decided to go behind it by walking straight over the rhubarb and breaking many stalks. grrrrr.
mmmmm we had our first rhubarb in a crumble on sunday - lovely!
I put 2 gifts of crowns in last year. Both are showing about 6" growth. No picking this time round of course but looking forward to a crumble next year.
To jump on this bandwagon, for our dinner tonite, we are having chicken portions stuffed butter with last years home grown garlic and parsley chopped into it, and served with rice which will have my wonderful leeks, which have been gently sweated in butter, stirred through. How yumsky is that!
Last night we had pork chops with fresh sage from the garden, and the evening before that we had salad and I had lashings of basil with the lettuce.
How content and happy and full of pride am I please! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
That's nowt! Next month I'm having fish & Chips with salt and vinigar and no b****y mayonnaise!
Just to add hte previously mentioned picking of rhubarb was just off one plant. I also have 3 other crowns which are recently planted (so no picking this year). The original plant already looks like it hasnt been touched!
