Title: Too late for carrots?
Post by: Sherwood on July 30, 2006, 18:07:19
Is there still time to sow carrots - I live in Nottingham? If so - main crop or earlies? Can I avoid fleecing them as it is so hot?

Yes.

No! Not worth the risk.

I don't think so ... according to my seed  packets. But I'm no expert, the slugs have had most of mine. I've read that planting earlies works better as they will crop sooner. Hope this helps.

I think you should still be able to sow  maincrop if you're quick, or earlies for another month or so.

I made a sowing a couple of weeks ago during the very hot spell. I cover mine with enviromesh - they have germinated well already and I've noticed in the middle of the rows, where the mesh is double as it overlaps, they are growing best of all. Think the cover helps to shade them and conserve the moisture - so worth doing for that reason as well as to beat the fly I think.

not too late and yes, I would go for it but be careful which variety you choose and be prepared to pick early and small if the later inclement weather looks to spoil the yield - maybe cloching them at some point will help. I am about to sow a few more and I live in the north west england region. Joy

Remember that baby carrots are delightful and considering the cost of a packet of seed ...
