Post by: gerbera on July 29, 2006, 10:50:24
How many flower heads is standard for a Stargazer lily? ???

I only have 1 bulb.....in past years there have been about 5 flowers on the stem.....but this year I have 11! (Did have 13 until clumsy builder knocked 2 off!) >:(

Wish I had a digital camera...its gorgeous!

Hi creckless.  I think you are doing really well to have 11 flowers on one stem, but of course it depends on the quality of the bulb and the conditions.  Shame we can't see a picture.   :(  I usually get around half a dozen blooms on each stem and I find stargazer one of the most powerfully scented of the oriental lilies.  Here's a close up of mine taken today in case others want to see what they look like.  G x

Georgie. That is lovely. Trouble is I keep looking at all these  lovely plants and keep making notes thinking I would like that. I just keep forgetting I only have a small garden and not an acre plot LOL

Those are gorgeous, Georgie! I agree about the scent. Mine is in a very small plant pot (5 1/2 inches across, 7 inches deep), so I have brought it inside the house so I can gaze lovingly at it all day! The whole house smells beautiful too.

I would recommend Stargazer to anyone. If you have a small garden, like me, then just pop a bulb of two in a pot!

I'd second that, creckless, lilies grow very happily in pots although I have to say mine are in much larger pots, about 12" across and 15" deep.  With 11 blooms I'm surprised yours is still upright!   ;D
