Title: Showing off mulched paths
Post by: supersprout on July 29, 2006, 10:29:00
The four long paths up the plot are finally covered with woodchips! If you have a moment to stroll up the communal path with me I can show them off :D

Path between me and neighbour with bindweed:

Wow that is so impressive.

In spite of that fact that I spend masses of time on my plot I still haven't managed to chip all my paths - and as for the weed jungle........

Good to see what is possible!

Aww, thank you for letting me show off a bit and for those kind comments (()). Confession time, twas no.1 son who shifted all those chippings in the heat, ma just raked them level :-[ :P

The plot would be nothing like without A4a - the secret ingredient  8) I do sometimes wonder how people manage without ???

Would the wood chip leave a stain on my shirt if we need to take a rest as we tour the path , I like to be prepared and will bring a rug if there is any chance of the afore mentioned hapening.

;D

you would be most welcome to take a little lie down rug or no, the neighbours would take it as yet another eccenteric mulch experiment 8)

very nice - how is the straw mulch working, would you recommend it ?

thank you for asking, unqualified yes mc - straw smothers annual weeds and seems to be doing a good job of keeping the moisture in the soil. It was a bit of a leap of faith, but pays divvies. Where bindweed peeps through, I scuffle the straw aside and pull it up by the root, it comes out easy, then lay it on the straw path to frazzle and put the straw back.

If your council delivers grass clippings foc I am sure they would do a grand job too on the cultivated areas. I'll also try spoiled hay - if I can get it - cos the grass seeds will have sprouted or been baked, so it will be better than fresh hay. Leaves get strewn about by birdies and cats. Spent hops are lovely, but I'm fast running out :'(. Cats also poo on the straw paths, but I just hurl it to the edge of the plottie where it won't do any harm.

Ask again in November - will it disintegrate into a mulchy mess? Watch this space ... ;)
