HI all! has anyone out there grown tomatillo's?
I have three sprawling plants with some fruit that are bursting or have burst out of their husks! The problem is that they taste horrid!!! bitter and sour which tells me they are not ready to eat! Also they are still very hard like peppers!!
I planted them at the end of my aubergine row and I suspect they are getting too much water!
Three questions!
1. What are they supposed to taste like, do you cook them?
2. Whats the texture like before you harvest?
3. Whats the problem, Help!
They might be a bit raw but not so far away
1-on their own they are what might be called an `acquired ` taste-chop them up with some red onions, chilli and coriander-a touch of yoghurt maybe and enjoy
2-hard,green and sticky to the touch
3-Nothing really-they might need a couple of weeks yet though
Cleo! What a star! I'm growing them for the first time and I know I'm being overly concerned!! A great reply with a recipie to boot!! thanks so much! I 'll keep checking them out!!
And contrary to what people may think, they are not tomatoes as the name suggests, but they are closely related.
Hi Biscombe, Hi all :)
You might want to do a search of old threads, using the second link at the top of the page, all your questions will be answered. :)
They aren`t ripe yet,

Thanks Col! I just know they will be ripe when I'm away on holiday for two weeks!! along with other yummy's in the garden!! Our house sitters will not go hungry ;)
Hi Biscombe, Hi all :)
They freeze well, like a bag of marbles, Just rinse all the stickness off and freeze whole and raw.
Cook from frozen

they go a beautiful stripy green and purple colour when ripe and yes they are sticky to touch - make fabulous salsa, chutney for example. Very thirsty plants so keep them well watered and feed a bit. You can peek inside the lantern to see if they are changing colour. Joy
What great posts! thanks everyone, my worries are over! one more question the fruits are getting big but not at all sticky! do you mean sticky on the inside or out??
