Title: Planting out brassica, no hot diggery!
Post by: supersprout on July 26, 2006, 13:12:48
Took plenty of photo breaks  :P whilst planting out caulis this morning the no-dig  way ::)
This method has been successful on my plot with any seedling grown in modules, which drop into dibber holes.

Method with illustrations if you're interested? :D

1. Mulch a patch of ground, water, and cover with perforated black plastic. Put in cloche hoops to anchor. First, mark holes with scissor x-cuts (avoids distorting the plastic), and make 6" deep dibber holes (this can take some time if the ground is hard). Wiggle the dibber so the hole is nice and wide to receive the module. I use a foot dibber like MikeB's parsnip planter but smaller - in front of pic. Get mesh ready. Start putting in seedlings nice and deep to the very bottom of the dibber hole.

2. All seedlings in, label, water ...

3. ... and immediately cover with mesh. Ready in three months! ;D

Hi Supersprout
I'm trying to get one or two bits together for the 'lottie whilst I'm waiting for Mick to do the heavy work. Can you buy the dibber or do I have to make one. As I'm not good at making things Wilkinsons would be the better option   ;D

Hi chocolate, that dibber has been a Boon and a Companion since I won it on ebay. I think you may have to get one made - mine was made by a blacksmith - unless you can find something like it. Tis the little foot pedal that makes all the difference :)

Hi Chocolate, try the following thread - maybe Mick will make you one.  As a point of interest don't go for the inferior ' Curry ' model. ;D ;D ;D

Hi MikeB
That one looks good but as I'm not too good on my legs I cant see me being able to stand on it      thanks for thinking of me tho'
Why I thought Supersprouts was good was because it had only a small dibber bit but a strong handle to push down with.   Do you know any one who does any thing like it    I cant see Mick being able to make that   He's more of a if you cant fit it hit it guy  ;D

SS can you supply a picture? Quote - (I cant see me being able to stand on it ) how about a smaller version of the parsnip planter that you could hit in with a hammer? Would that do?

Mike
Yeah say a shorter one but narrow like SS's then a wide bit at the top to hit with the hammer ......yeeehhh    that sounds OK as I've got a small hammer with a wide hitting bit ...I reckon that would be good you know.   Right how do we make that then ???

Have been on E Bay to  have a look on that site you reccomended  SS and found two or three different ones. The one that I think will suit me is like a small spade handle with a point made of metal. Have put a bid in ( not done it before ) so hopefully will get it.
If it doesn't work I could always stab Mick with it for not doing my 'lottie  ;D

Thanks Mike   I went onto ebay the other night and saw some thing similar but shorter and it had a pointed end. If I was good with the computer I could show you its so frustrating. Anyway this chap makes old fashioned tools so I'm waiting for this dibber to arrive.
Hopefully it will be OK, think with tools its all about suck it and see isn't it !!
Oooopppssss That doesn't sound right does it ;D ;D ;D ;D
When it comes I'll suck it and see   ;)
Sorry!!

Wash it first ;)
Could you copy the link from ebay and post it here please choccy? If the guy makes old fashioned tools, he could be the Man for Me ::)
