Hi. I had a lovely beetle (at least, I'm fairly certain it was a beetle) in the garden today. It was about 1.5 to 2 cm long, thin, with dark red head and thorax and a very glossy, bronze abdomen with a black tip. It was on a Lupin. No sign of it in my book of British insects. Any ideas?

There are several thousand beetles in the UK, and they're notoriously difficult. With nothing but a vague description, there's not much chance. Sorry.
Does six legs and wings help? ;)

Aw well, G. we did try!!! Maybe the next time you see it a lovely picture will be taken and then we will find out what breed it is!! LOL
:o :o :o
I think saying it is a 'vague description' is rather harsh. I thought it was a very good and full one from a non-expert. What more you you want?
With thanks to Eric for his support, Greenwizard for identifying it and Google, this is the beetle, commonly known as the soldier beetle. :) G x
