Title: There are some days when it all goes right!
Post by: tim on July 23, 2006, 18:00:57
Thought LEEKS - which a friend gave me.
Dragged myself & 3 loads of ex-potting soil up to the ex-shallot patch.
Added generous portion of dry manure.
Only just managed to carry the Honda up there - seems very heavy this year!
So rocky down below that it kept jamming the tines. The dibber is great for bashing the rocks out.
Raked & tamped it all down.

Then the rain came.  20mm.

Out again, & found that I only had to lean gently with my 14 stone to get the dibber up to its hilt.
Everything was so smooth that the holes were the cleanest I've ever ever made.

SO pleasing.  And then it rained again to water them in!!

Just neatened the tops up, Jim. The roots had snarled themselves up, as you can see, so you couldn't trim anyway.

The photo may look funny - there was a big lot & a very small lot.

Lovely, Tim! A job for me yet to do. Tomorrow if it's not too hot, perhaps. Got spaces now and three pots of leeklets. No rain forecast, but no hosepipe ban either.

You had rain?

Gimme! We've not had rain since we had that brief thunderstorm on Thursday(?) night.. and even that only lasted about half an hour.

Tim, you may recall my parsnip dibber, a metal version also designed in wood by MikeB? This has an additional advantage, that its length avoids the need for bending (assuming you can drop the leeks into the hole accurately  :) My leeks are desparate to be planted out, so I will be using this technique, since I doubt I can rely on any imminent rain ...

My leeks are growing despite the drought. I'v got them planted a couple of inches apart, unil I have a bed spare for them, and it seems to be working.
