Title: Pregnant Courgette
Post by: Common_Clay on July 23, 2006, 02:35:59
Ok, maybe not pregnant, but... I picked a smallish courgette a while ago and had it in the fridge, then forgot about it as I was cropping bigger ones and found it the other day. What was once a slim courgette is now bulbuous beyond belief in the middle... I'm rather worried something may be 'hatching' in it?!
It is past edible now and I'm a bit squeamish to cut it open, lol... is this a common thing that happens to this type of veg?

:-\
Thanks

It's probably just seeds  :D I expect the poor thing has had time to realise its days are numbered  ;D

Seriously though, I think that's likely to be why. As for bulbous [only] in the middle; the courgette can't take energy from the plant to mature all its seeds, so all its energy is going into a few seeds.

Are you going to be brave and dissect it to see?

Quite normal, if it happens to one on the plant just cut it off to stop the plant from giving up, having set seeds!
