Slightly damp, sharp sand is fine

Can you not leave the root veggies in the ground for a bit longer? I tend to lift main crop carrots in October/November for storage but leave the parsnips in the ground right through winter. A frost on them also makes them far sweeter.

I find dry peat or old potting compost for such as carrots & root vegetables and hessian sacking for potatoes. Then of course there is the freezer.
