Title: Bumper french beans
Post by: Mrs Ava on July 18, 2006, 14:01:46
Remember how I recommended Alderman peas as a great producer or lovely long, fat peas?  Well today I would like to sing the praises of the dwarf French Bean 'The Prince'.  I have only 20 plants, and yet I am picking lovely long slender tender pods twice a week, and so far have frozen over 2Ibs, and picked another pound today!  I will definately be growing those again next year.

Those look great!!

I lost the first of these that I planted and now have some just threatening to flower in 10 litre pots.  Again, have had a fight with the slugs for them.  Do you think I have a chance of getting a crop?

cheers, Shirley

Wow, amazing! I'm green with envy ;D

I had a really big problem with snails this year. Most of my seedlings were eaten by them.
I had to sow them again this month. Am hoping that they will give me some beans.

I actually have some 'The Prince' seeds left so will sow them again next year!

I have some only just germinating so yes, I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to pick french beans into the autumn.

Thanks, that is great news, might plant a few more then!  I hate them but the menfolk love them.

I am growing the Prince this year and I am getting a steady crop.

I like to pick mine a bit younger than those you have shown in the picture, I find although I am getting less weight I find they are more succulent then.

Basically all I have to do is drop them in boiling water for a few minutes to warm through and eat them el dente' I think thats the expression. OK! put it another way............nearly raw!

Hi All

Another thumbs up from me for 'THE PRINCE'.

Last year it cropped for ages.
Also leave a few plants to mature and dry the beans for next year. I've had a greater than 90% success rate from those saved last year.

Happy cropping
Scumpy

Yes, teegee, I would normally pick them smaller, but see what happens when you don't pick for 4 days!  The first lot were a lot smaller than this.

The Prince is a good variety but you should try "Canadian Wonder" its a old variety and I found that this is the one for taste and very heavy cropping. They are not found in many catalogues but you can get them from Kings seeds,WJ Boyce, and Johnsons
