Title: Can anyone ID this tree/plant ?
Post by: Chris Graham on July 16, 2006, 18:01:10
Hi,

I have just moved into a new home and noticed a tree that was not being looked after.

I have tidied the area and removed some large fir trees from the garden and it had grown so fast and really looking good.

Only problem is, i havent a clue to what it is or how to take care of it.

We did think it was an apple tree but there is a small cherry fruit appearing.  Not sure if you can eat this or not but i would really like to know.

Thanks for your help

Well, I would say that is exactly what it is....a cherry.  The leaves are the same for certain.

What are the wee red things at the start of the leves?

Agree it is a cherry. The red things where the leaves start are part of the plant, they are not some nasty disease or insect.

Is that where the cherrys grow from?

No they grow from the branches not the leaves. Check where that one cherry is coming from. Give it a couple of years and it'll probably be producing masses, if it isn't doing so already. You'll have to net it though, if you don't want the birds getting in first.

Looking at the picture of the tree, it could be a 'flowering' cherry, as opposed to a 'fruiting' tree.  The flowering varieties do set seed, but as in the picture, are very small, as opposed to a fruiting varietiy.
