Title: Elephant Garlic ...weird nodules
Post by: dingerbell on July 16, 2006, 14:31:19
I've just completed my Garlic harvest...100 beautiful fat bulbs drying on wre racks in the sun....plaiting next week.  The question is with my hefalumps. On digging them up, all are perfectly spherical and the size of a tennis ball with small hard brown nodules around the outside of the bulb. Have I done something wrong or is this normal for hefalumps..???

They've been normal for me every year. I take them off.Tried to grow from them in a pot, but nothing happened. Won't affect your garlic or its storage.

Haven't lifted mine yet. LOVE lifting the elephant stuff, such a thrill every yar 8)

I had them as well; I think they're just mini cloves growing in odd places. I wouldn't worry.

A friend of mine has been growing elephant garlic and gave me a bulb with about 12 of these little nodules growing from it - told me they were baby garlics and if I dry them and plant them in autumn that will be my crop for next year - that is what they do every year.

While on the subject of elephant garlic I saw it for sale in our local farm shop - £1.30 a bulb !!!
