Title: Potatoes in compost bin
Post by: Common_Clay on July 16, 2006, 12:11:57
Is it fine to put potatoes unfit for the table (ie. green, very tiny, etc) into the compost bin? I know that you're supposed to remove all tubers from the ground, even the smallest, to prevent them from putting disease in the ground, but should I be careful with putting them in the compost bin? Thanks.

You'll find that you will have potatoes growing in your bin next year and if they haven't rotted down fully then they will be growing where you spread your compost.

If they survive, pick them out as you dig out the compost. The odd one or two may last the winter, but by that rtime they'll have no strength left anyway, and will be easily dealt with. I gave up worrying about things like that long ago.

I have a potato growing in one of my garden pot plants courtesy of commercially produced compost.  I'm curious to discover what variety!
