Title: Another Newbie
Post by: Irish T on July 14, 2006, 14:09:20
Hello everyone  :D :D

I am another newbie. Had my allotment for roughly a year now. Been reading some posts on here and find them very interesting & very helpfull. On the allotment I have got most of the usual crops but I am having problems with 3x courgettes which are in a grow bag in the greenhouse. They have been getting enough water but the fruit has gone yellow on the ends, I have also fed them with tomato feed a few times. Does anyone have any ideas what I am doing wrong???

Hi Irish T,
I'm no expert, but some varieties of courgette do turn yellow, it's perfectly normal.

Hi Irish T

I think someone else mentioned that if the ends of courgettes are going yellow and withering then it is a pollination problem.. I have the same thing with a couple of my courgettes outside but I'm getting plenty of health ones so not too bothered.  Maybe because yours are in a greenhouse they need a little helping hand with pollination.  Like others have said, find a fresh male flower, pick it, carefully tear the petals off then push it in anther (bit with the pollen) first into a fresh female flower and rub against the stigma (female bits).  The female flowers will have a small courgette already forming at their base, and the male ones have a longish thin stalk with no swelling.

Hope this helps

Hi there IT.

Courgette expert that I am (not) I'd say if they weren't meant to be yellow, then I'd agree with sweet-pea about the pollination problem.

My female flowers appeared long before any males and I kept a sharp eye on them incase they started going soft and rotting.  Thankfully so far none have, probably cos I'm cutting them before they're having time to rot !  I find the female flowers close so quickly that I have no idea how the bees get to do their job at all !

Plenty more coming along now, so I don't mind if they're a bit on the small side when I'm cutting them and they taste just fine !

Do let us know how you get on eh ?
