Title: Dumb Question from Newbie Chutney Maker
Post by: blisters on July 10, 2006, 11:25:17
This is probably a dumb question, but what is the best way of steralising jars before filling them?

there are a few ways. in all cases wash and rinse thoroughly and then
1. boil for five minutes or
2. put in medium oven for ten or fifteen minutes or
3. microwave on full for a couple minutes.

if i am doing a lot i use 2. if i am just doing a couple i use 1.  ;)

Properly clean and rinse them out first and leave a smidgeon of water in them for the microwave method, the steam sterilises them. Full power for about 3-4 minutes. Take out, carefully (hot!) tip out any remaining water then right way up to dry.
If you do dry jars, or wipe them - DON'T use paper kitchen towel. Use a clean white glass cloth.
