I know this is a strange question but I would like to know whether urine is good or bad for the garden/lottie.
The reason I ask is that my daughter uses a potty when at the lottie and I have been throwing the contents away (over the nettles at the back). Is this the right thing to do or is there a better use for it?
Thanks all
put on the compost heap.
you throwing it at the nettles only lets them grow better - which is also good because you can harvest them for nettle tea (fertilizer)
Small quantities on the compost heap will make it rot faster. More will saturate it, leak into the ground, and go to waste. I put it in a barrel and use it as liquid manure.
Just remember that human urine is 20 times stronger than cow urine, so dilute it accordingly. By the way it is also sterile, unliike faeces!
I've completely killed all the mares tail behind my greenhouse by weeing on it regularly.
Have just received an early birthday present from a friend. It was a book called "Liquid Gold", by Carol Steinfield, it's the lore and logic of using urine to grow plants.
She says that every day people in Britain excrete about 18 millon gallons of urine , which by some estimates has enough nitrogen to fertilize up to 6,000 acres of maize in one year. She goes into the safe usage of it, and as well as using it to nourish plants, the book goes into alsorts of other things it can be used for. Fascinating! I haven't read all the book, but it has some very interesting ideas in there, if you are brave enough to use them! :D busy_lizzie

yes, in larger quantities and undiluted it can indeed wreak havoc.
i recall the german authorities being worried for the trees in their towns as all the football fans have been relieving themselves against trees and bushes :-x

Is this a secret we have been waiting for ? :)
Hi everybody ;D I use mine on the compost heap and I also dribble some around the edges of me raised beds to keep the foxes away ;D
aaaahhh!!! I have been found out! now you all know how I used to win prizes at the village show! ::)
Don't some peeps use it to give their hunions a boost? I slosh mine onto my compost heap, tis only mine so is very unlikely to saturate it. Doesn't put the mouse family off though!

In early season when they need nitrogen but not when they start swelling then you need potash and no nitrogen whats so ever.

The nitrogen content acts as a 'rotting' agent

No because the rotting process causes heat, and they like warm places.
if it does get rid of mares tail i'll personally go around with a potty asking for donations.
I alternate peeing on the compost heap and into the vat in which I am brewing my nettle/comfrey/pee tea. The slow worm in my compost heap doesn't seem to mind too much.
As my allotment site is enormously proud of it's onsite plumbed loos, I'm sure The Committee (as well as the local council) would be aghast if I 'fessed up to the occasional 'accelerating' of my compost heap of a quiet evening!
