i hope theres a class at our local produce show for the most male cucumber flowers to the plant-cos i shall win hands down!! >:(
nary a lady flower to be seen at kitty towers...
*sigh*
marketmore 70..if anyone wants to avoid them in future... ::)
mind you-we are doing okay on the tomato front-peppers are a tad slow and aubs none existant really-i hope tims doing mail order this year!! ;)
and me taters are fine so far-plenty of lubly rocket and kestrel being chomped..and my sierra lettuces are second to none!*kitty beams proudly* ;D ;Dfor future reference they seem very slug resistant-and i speak from the Slug Capital of Lincolnshire!
what else?
o yes-beans are coming along-lots of flowers so far no beans yet...o and garlic-when we last spoke of garlic the one i dug up hadnt 'cloved'...well-the rest have-and there are a few that would even be welcome at sainsburys, such is the size and quality..of course-there are one or three that look as if they are from the bargain bucket of life-but we cant all be jennifer anniston can we-and i'm sure they taste as good.
as the other garlic, not jennifer anniston.
i bet shes right gristley.
aaaanyway,carrots-getting lovely and large-not a fly to be seen-but we are on a windy corner so unless they have good brakes i think they carry on to spalding... :D
i dont want to talk about my broad beans.
me beets are small but perfectly formed-i shall want a pickling recipe soon...
and there are 25 acres of wheat nicely ripening out the back..o alright-technically that belongs to the farmer down the village-but i can dream cant i?
all in all it looks like a lovely harvest in the offing-however big or small it is its the most satisfying thing thwacking down a loada spuds and knowing you've grown them..i hope everyone is enjoying their summer too!
luv
kitty
;D
I grew Marketmore 76 last year and, if memory serves me, I only started to get female flowers on side shoots once I'd pinched the top out. My memory isn't what it used to be though.
Ah yes, dreaming of 25 acres of wheat. Just imagine it was yours and you had to sow and reap it by hand. That should take care of the fantasies nicely.
;D
you's two
thanks for the special report, agent kitty
no jennifer aniston on your plot? i wonder where she is hiding then
lol kitty loved the report, hope you do another one soon
especially loved the windy corner and fly with brakes ::) ;D
I'm growing a cucumber called Petita in my polytunnel this year - and have had 3 lovely cukes already and a glut on the way. very highly recommended. ;)
;D Kitty. Thanks for that. 8)
Hi kitty, :D
Good report, just like school ,could do better :o not you the veg ;D
any way for your beets try this easy but subtly different recipe;
boil the beets as normal, I find my slightly larger than golf ball size need 15 mins.
boil 1/4 pint vinegar with 1/4 pint water, put 1/2 a packet of raspberry jelly in a jug & pour vinegar/water mix over to dissolve. Dice cooled beets, place in sterilized jars( 2 about 3/4 lb size ) , pour over the jelly mix, cool & then chill to set the jelly.
Delicious with pork pie, or other savoury things.
Adrian.
How long does the beetroot jelly keep Adrian? I've pickled mine this year, but your recipe sounds delicious for next year.
Hi all, :D
Forgot to mention that one, It will keep certainly for at least a year, we are on the last jar from July 2005. Also just in case of confusion, once the jelly has set remove from the fridge & store as normal with other pickles.
Adrian.
hahaha!thanks for all the replys troops-djbrenton-i pinched me tops out ages ago-*sigh*o well-i spose theres plenty of time yet-there are lots and lots of buds coming-one of thems bound to have a cuc aint it?ha!i think i shall try squashmads pertita next year-
o-the beet jelly sounds lovely-i am going to do half pickled and half jellied-then i have an excuse to do taste tests!
constantly..
we had a major thunderstorm at kitty towers-management did his best ,bless 'im,to repair the carnage but he said it needed the head gardner.
failing that ,i could have a go!lol! ;D
jennifer anniston could lend a hand but she has her nails to look after..
anyway, after some serious stringwork that would make sprout proud ,order was restored in the veg patch-see,we live on a fairly exposed corner of a wheatfield and-being the top end of lincolnshire-its ENTIRELY CLAY-i mean-josiah wedgewood 'd have a field day!
so we have built all raised beds-so far there are 3x 10ft square and 3x8'x4'-theres only the 2 of us now sprog has grown and flown-anyway-all the beds are 10"high so veg is grown close and hard-very little irrigation unless you're a seedling..but the weather is noticable ::)
the tomatoes dont seem to have suffered even tho they are all top heavy with fruit-i know pride is a sin! ;D ;)
we've anchored them down now,,
fpr tea;-pan fried Horganic pork with Hunions and garlic, spring cabbage and rocket taters in a juicy gravy..strawberries to follow-the only thing that wasnt home grown was the pork..and that was local..all in all our tea travelled 15 yards -not bad in the food miles stakes!
o,the gravy came from morrisons..that adds a bit dont it...
right-footys on..despite our lot being at home i must go boo ronaldo..
catch you alter veggites
kitty
xx
You didn't get your cucs from the same guy as me did you Kitty because I have only male flowers too and they are still only half a foot high so I ain't pinching them out yet.
hi clanger-no-i saw you get it at the sale-i grew all mine meself-blinkin millions of the things-and i've sold a lot at the door-so i shall be in hiding for the next season! ;D
i pinched out when i could count 6 leaves....i have actually found a weeny cuc that has snuck up on me...just the one in15 plants!
good average ay?
*sigh!*
