I've been sowing Mirabeau radishes from Thompson & Morgan since Feb. They started off delicious, fat and crisp. But all the ones sown since the end of May have been horrible - skinny, woody and flavourless. :(
It's my first year growing them so I am completely clueless. Why have they turned horrible? Should I just keep sowing?
It's probably just too hot and dry for them. I have given up sowing them up the lottie and now only sow them in trays at home. That way I can keep them moist and but them in shady areas if it gets too hot.
Yep, RC has it. Radish are best grown quick and lush, plenty of water to keep them plump and juicy. Because I do not have access to piped water on my allotment, I stop sowing radish in June and start again in September when it is cooler. If you can water them regularly, then it is okay to keep sowing, but try to sow them somewhere where it is shadey, in the shadow of something taller like your runners for example.

I hid mine in with the carrots and forgot until some woody red footballs appearred lol !!!

I tried some long white icicles and let's just say that what I dug up could not have been any further from that description!
oh dear, I didn't realise that they needed regular watering ... will have to wait and see.
I sowed radishes between my parsnips as recommended. If the radishes are poor, does that mean the parsnips haven't had enough water either and are also likely to fail?
I remember hearing that parsnips (and carrots) grow bigger with less water/in well drained soil this is because they have to send their root further down in search of moisture.
