I've been growing garlic successfully in pots for a few years now. So why has one of them done this this year? As you can see, it's affected the size of the 'bulb'. >:( G x

Not sure but a couple of ours did it as well??
Irritating isn't it? It's not even as if the bulblets are big enough to be worth planting in the autumn. :(

Never heard of that but it's interesting to see. Maybe some sort of damage to the stem started it?
Some varieties are more prone to this than others, it is quite normal.
This is Thermidrome. It's never done it before.

None of my Thermidone have done this.
There is a bit about it here (http://www.garlicworld.co.uk/garden/page2.html)
Oh thanks, that's interesting. :)

You got a spare pot for garlic greens? Sounds very good!
Some purple garlic bought from the Continental Market has these bulbils right above the bulbs. They still considered them good enough to sell :)
Looks like I was worrying about nothing eh?

Oo I don't know, you don't want crop failure and it did look wierd
Was that garlic your entire crop?
Have you got enough to plait? ;)
(ducks)
ROFL!

One of mine did it so I saved them to plant and see what happens
That's a bigger bulb than any of mine!!
Well Tim, I wasn't intending to harvest for a couple more weeks but this particular plant had flopped over so I thought I'd better get it out.

I think I posted about having this happen to me last year.
ah yes,

They were Thermidrome too!

ps For anyone was growing hardneck garlic: you cut the tiny flower scapes off to bulk up the main bulbs.
If you leave the scapes in a cool place, they suck up all the food from the stems and grow tiny bulbils anyway - and you can separate them and use as tiny cloves! I got 100g of them that way, and peeled them off and froze them as a bag of instant garlic!
had that myself on garlic a year or two ago. Bizarre.
I pulled off the four little bulblets today, planted 3 in a 5" pot for 'garlic chives' and ate the fourth raw. My was it strong - but so yummy. ;D

Now I've got as far as peeling the dirty outer layers from my Albigensian Wight, several bulbs have done the same thing. I forgot the camera today, but I'll try to get a pic before I attempt to plait it.
Eeek it must be catching! ;) ;D

Glad it's not only mine thats done that.
getting ready for plaiting today I have discovered one of my thermidon has done this, and one has a second bulb in the neck of the first, right on top of it.
