Title: deadhead lilac?
Post by: grawrc on June 29, 2006, 20:31:44
My 2 intertwined lilac trees have produced fabulous blossom for the first time this year. Now that the flowers have died back should I deadhead? If so how? Thanks for any advice!

Prune lilacs in the summer and winter to avoid tall, straggly growth. As blooms fade, cut back flowered shoots to a pair of leaves below the flower-head. In winter, prune weak branches back to their base, remove suckers and thin out older branches. Look out for new shoots that form below the flowers. These can be easily damaged when the old flowerheads are cut, resulting in reduced flowering next year.Overgrown lilacs can be pruned hard in late winter, reducing old branches to short stumps.
