Title: How are everyone's Chilli Peppers doing?
Post by: blisters on June 28, 2006, 23:05:41
I sowed some Fresno Chilli Peppers at the end of March and whilst being sturdy, healthy little plants - little is the problem - the biggest is only about 5" tall.

Is this normal or do I have a problem? ???

I've Apache (saved seeds) in tubs in the 'house - all about 10-12", all covered in flowers - not long now!

Mine have just started romping away but none is over 18". Some have set fruit, most have not, but loads of flowers. They really suffered with the deluge a while back, they hated sitting in cold wet soil, but now it is dry and hot they are very happy.

Of the various varieties I'm growing, Fresno is the most advanced. I've been picking them at full size for a few weeks now.

Mine are small too. I think the bad weather we had in the spring affected their growth. The same varieties grew fine last year.
I really hope I will still get some crop.  :P

Thanks guys.

It's a relief to know that I aren't on my own and that my little chilli's are normal.  It's my first time with Chilli's and I haven't a clue what to expect.

Wow, DJBrenton, yours are doing well :-*

Some of mine were only sown 3 weeks ago, so I have 6 newly planted out seedlings.  These will come into the conservatory in November to provide us with chillis during those dark cold winter months.  Mine germinated erratically so some are 18 inches tall with flower buds, others are 2 inches tall and growing.  I don't worry, I don't want a sack fall all at once, otherwise I will have to put them in the freezer to join the other bag that we are slowely working through!

I started a few varieties back in March... quite late I understand, and have some in the greenhouse and some planted outside. None are very far advanced (all under 8" at a guess).

However I did buy one Jalapeno from the garden centre that has flowers, this is about 1' so far so I'm hoping this provide for all my chilli needs before the season is over and we're back to winter again (probably September).

Um. (embarrassed) some of mine are over 20" tall... and we have several 2-3" long chillies. Very hot conservatory though, and the BBC trial ones (swapped for at BBC GW Live) are much smaller (~8") so I think I just started the rest a bit early.

It also depends on variety. Mine are a peculiar mix of Anaheim, Old Mother's, a saved one we call short round (!), Bulgarian carrot and purple venezuelan. Plus twilight and fiesta from the Beeb.

Purple venezuelan is a hoot. Wish I'd got more to grow, but we've still some frozen ones from last year. Pea size and shape, and colour, if you pick them early. They turn green on cooking, and are blinking hot! Perfect for dropping in Thai green curries for the unwary who think they are indeed peas...

I'm trying an experiment with the chillis this year.  I've grown a batch off Apache and Salmon from seed. Potted them up and left half to grow on as normal.  There now about 10 inches high and starting to bud.  The rest I've grown on in a hydroponic unit and the're well ahead and better plants.  Flowering now and much bushier and stronger looking. I would say they would be around 2 weeks further on.  All in the greenhouse of course.

I've got a few Cayenne plants going - one is in the greenhouse, I mean the office - so similar, I get confused :-\!  This is about 28" tall and has lots of flowers but only two chillies so far, prob due to lack of insects - the shaking and tickling seems not to be over-successful.  I have one at home, outside which is about 16" tall but not v.bushy.  It does, however, have about 6 chillies on it ;D, ranging from tiny baby ones, to about an inch long.  I also have another Cayenne inside and this is v.bushy and the first buds are showing now (I started this one a fair bit later), and also a couple of other varieties that are only small cos I started them about 4 weeks ago! ;D

My cayenne from seed are about 6" to 8"

The patio chilli I bought as a 4 " seedling is 24" tall with its first two tiny green chillis on it. The stalks of the first few fruits that formed turned yellow and fell off. I presume that these weren't pollinated?
