Title: Male/Female Cucumber Flowers
Post by: Stork on June 28, 2006, 20:13:40
Hi All,

My cucumbers are flying up in the greenhouse.

I now have about 12 flowers on two plants. I think I have read somewhere that you have to remove flowers of one gender or the other but I can't remember which way round it is. Also - how would I tell one from the other?

Each yellow flower has what looks like a small, prickly cucumber behind it.

Any suggestions gratefully received. And next year I'll keep the seed packet!

leave them alone!

at least the flowers with the prickly cuc behind - because those are the females making fruit. if you spot any male ones, on a thin long-ish stalk without a baby bump in sight, then maybe you can take those away.

Presuming they are indoor cucumbers (i'm growing outdoor ones indoors!), remove all the male flower or the cucumbers will taste nasty. Outdoor ones need both male and female flowers.

Thanks for the tips and the very helpful photo's.

I'll assume they're indoor ones and whip of any guys.

Hi
I'm growing cues for the first time this year and bought 2 plants from the local church thrift morning for 30p each they were labeled 'cue ridge'.  I planted them in the greenhouse.  I then found out that ridge cues are outdoor varieties :P

It's the first time i have read that i need to be pinching off the male flowers... but do i ,are they indoor or outdoor cues..... i am very confused.  (it doesn't take much ;D)

With ridge, no. Only if you had all-female ones in there too that you didn't want cross-pollinated.
