Tim,
they look great. :D
A very handsome head of calabrasse/brocolli!
aw bless !
;D
Got a rocket for pulling up all our sprouting last year because I let the C/Ws take over.
This year I expect to have brassica coming out of our ears!!
was it salad rocket or WILD rocket ? :P
Hooray indeed!
That's the one drawback of mesh - you can't show off the pristine brassica underneath until you change it! ;D
Wild, KP, wild!!
hee hee - bet she was bl00dy furious ;D
Put out some cabbages yesterday, dutifully put the mesh over, and like magic - the first Cabbage White butterfly I have seen this year suddenly fluttered by! Am glad I got that mesh :)
I was thinking that yesterday Jen when i was sitting eating my lunch in the brassica bed (well, tis as nice a place as any). Not a single butterfly fluttered by! Last year by now my kale had taken a hammering....this year it is so lush! Are we about to be dive bombed by hundreds of the little fluttering things?
Well, I learned my lesson last year, put the brassicas in, left it a week, and toooo late! they had already laid! Funny though that butterfly turned up, maybe it was the scent of the cabbages.
Everything that was Brassica got stripped last year on our plot, all covered this year....guess what? No sign of the little devils .....yet!!!! ;D
Saw one yesterday! Slugs are causing me more of a problem at the moment. >:(
In all, I've seen 3. The first one had a meal of brassica before I covered fully. Something strange is happening.
Such a shame that we can't uncover & admire all these lovely plants?
i may live to regret this but i found so many small fly things underneath my cauli netting today that i've just taken it off !
i'll keep a close eye on them though for unusual beings !
;D
This may sound like a stupid question but is it only brassicas that need to be covered?
Brassica don't have to be covered, but you might end up feeling smug and virtuous if you do! ;D
Mesh keeps the wind off - so it's been over my seedcorn transplants, briefly, and will go over overwintering broadies.
Keeps the splashes down - so it's been on overwintering spinach and low-lying greens
And keeps the birds off - so it should have been over lettuce and artichoke transplants >:( :'( ;)
Edit: keeps carrot fly off too if it's fine :)
If we don't mesh or at least net ours the wood pigeon gets 'em!
>:(
Not to mention the rabbits! >:(
