questions in the title - what edibles are you growing for the first time this year? (new varieties don't count, if you've already grown that veg/fruit before!)
My list:
aubergines
beetroot
carrot
leeks
lettuce
parsnips
potatoes
radish
squash
edited coz I forgot garlic.
(actually it's not nearly as much as I thought!)
pumpkins, carrots, romanesco, sweetcorn, maincrop pots, leeks, tomatoes - quite a lot then!
Only had the garden before so concentrated on things like herbs, mangetout and lettuces
Nothing new this year, but when I do come to my senses and stop growing for sale I am going to try a pineapple-don`t have any spare room just now :(
Stephan
I'm completely new to the growing/gardening thing this year. I'm growing:
Tomatoes
Peppers
Chillis
Coriander
Parsley
Basil
Potatoes
Garlic
I've only ever grown Radishes before, as a kid. :)
Jerusalem artichokes, and lots of new flowers that will hopefully grow!!
Carrots, zucchini, okra, blueberries, tomatillo (fingers crossed I don't kill 'em all)
Tomatillos
Guava
Kale
Florence fennel
Kohl rabi
pak choi
leeks
Think thats all. Having had an allotment before when I lived with ma and pa I had already grown lots, plus before having this plot I had a veggie patch in the garden so have managed to give most things a go, not necessarilly successfully though.
why do I keep forgetting about the florence fennel? (thanks again EJ!)
My list is getting longer and longer - I may start panicking soon - do I have room? Oh what the h*ll, I'll make room!
Weeds.
Ten x
Ten, you only growing weeds for the first time....I seem to have been cultivating them for years!
I forgot capers. I forgot cos they are in a jar in damp tissue in my fridge! 1 month down, only 2 more to go!!
I had planned to grow all sorts, but with the weather always choosing a weekend to rain/hail/sleet down on my poor allotment, I have decided to cultivate weeds. I am going to sell off all my mares tails as miniature xmas trees and make a fortune! Bwah hah hah!!!!
Ten x

EJ had to nip in the local garden center yesterday to buy a gift, and yes I came out with 4 new packets of seeds!! (like I need more varieties of courgettes!) Tis an obssesion I tell ya!

Lots and lots of reading to do....and probably lots of posts too :-)
Since we've had an allotment for quite a few years we've sort of settled on things we know we like and will use - which covers a lot.
But after reading the section on sweetcorn I'm going to give that a try. No one has managed it successfully on our site so I'm not too hoeful - but think if I did manage to get them to grow!!!
Also trying aquilegia for the first time (fingers crossed again) and have bought a miniature orange tree (for the house/balcony really).
Just for the record planted asparagus last week (April 15) but as they are jsut 1 year plugs I guess I'll need to wait about 4 years to see if they are a success
Carrots?
Well, for the umpteenth time really, but hopefully, for the first time SUCCESSFULLY! ;D ;D ;D
All best, Gavin
Japanese burdock, chickpeas (my dad grew those) - for popcorn, funny shaped squash things, amaranths for grain (akin to love lies bleeding), kales, later in year, winter radish.
Having a go at
Peppers
Broad beans
French beans
Radishes
Parsnips
Potatoes
Carrots
Brocolli
Sprouts
And loads of flowers and plants too.
Please let them grow! ::)
Richard - after tasting your own sprouting broccoli, you'll never bother with asparagus again. But, as with that, choose a good farm butter!! = Tim (Oh God, the size again! And the focus?)
Going to try squash/sweet melons for the first time ever. Looking at the list above I see I'm not a very 'flowery' person. Must correct that, but I'm a fanatic for sweet-peas, marigolds and sun flowers. Pretty average lottie flowers, must change my ways!
red sprouts
green sprouts
pumpkin
will try garlic later in the year, also rasp's which i planted today. There's a wild corner at my allotments with self sown rasp canes so today I rehomed approx 35 canes on my lottie. Now I can wait for them to fruit.
