Title: Splitting Sweetcorn Stalks
Post by: dicky on June 27, 2006, 12:21:39
Hi

It's my first time growing sweetcorn and I'm growing Swift F1. They are about 2 foot high andlooking very healthy.

Just wondering id it is normally for the stalks to produce what look like side shoots (mini stalks) from around the base.

It looks like I have one main stalk with 2 little ones either side on the plant.

Yes, this is called Tillering. Perfectly normal. You should get more cobs of the side shoot.

I am growing Swift and it is doing exactly the same.

Thanks Jerry, was having a look around the plots yesterday and some peoples had and some peoples hadn't, more cobs = good.
