And are they not the hardest things to shell? I read today that it's easier if you boil them briefly first.

I always steam the big broadies in their skins, and peel them after :) (wait a bit or you'll have burnt fingers)

In case I'm misread - that's not boiling to peel - although, yes, it works - it's to EAT!!

Tender even at that size.

discovered that today tim, picked them bigger than the usual little finger size, and tried the pods - still delicious and tender :)
you don't buy these in the supermarkets ;D
I tried some 'farmer's broadies' from a field, they seem to be bred with really tough skins - presumably to cope with the shelling machines?

Mine were very young - 5" - but I did need to 'string' a couple.

hmmm, to me the pods always seem to spongy to be appertising.  Number one son enjoys podding them as he says the beans are in their own little sleeping bags.  Mine are picked young, to beat the furry critters, so maybe I will try them whole this weekend.....

When my son was at his nursery school, he came home singing a new song:

The apples are ripe
The plums are red
The broad beans are sleeping in their blankety beds

:D
