Not jealous - but just did a comparison.
Play for England = £115000 per week.
Fight for England = £50 per month = £500 per week today.
E&OE
You choose!!
Tim, it is all out of proportion, the footballers are not risking their lives! I'm stating the obvious I know! What gets to me is all the young lads who spend so much money which goes into the footballers' and the people around them's pockets, it is not fair.
Comparisons of who earns what for even loosely similar jobs is a tricky one - speaking as a jobbing gardener earning x for the hands and knees work + some knowledge of what I'm actually doing + possible/probable permanent physical damage to myself further down the line against the man with the lawn cutting contract, with no knowledge of grass culture, commanding a fee of xxx who walks, rather than staggers, away from his days work, isn't rational. To compare the amount an idol in today's culture commands against any 'ordinary' job of work just isn't possible, I think.
To soldiering:the point has to be made, tho, that today's soldiers aren't conscripts. They chose to enter a career with a definite career structure and published rates of pay + benefits + pension. That career soldiers may then be ordered to fight must surely be a given risk of the job? Brutally, if they weren't squealing about pay and conditions as professional soldiers in a time of peace, why squeal now that they're asked to do the job they signed up for?
Just ask yourself how much a top surgeon earns and how many years he trains and then works. Compared to the short workspan of a footballer I think he does a better job and is not allowed to make as many mistakes.
So called "stars" wages are obscene.
YES - didn't really mean to provoke - I'm NOT squealing - just a chuckle!
Like didn't have a car till we were 30!!
Hi everyone,
I say 'Good Luck to the England football team'.In the past players were paid a pittance while the fans watched the games in run down stadiums. Now we can all watch the matches from the comfort of our homes or go to relatively safe and comfortable grounds to watch the games live.
If the players are lucky enough to make an absolute fortune from all of the tv rights and sponsorship, 'Best Of British Luck' to them, I say.
Dont get me wrong though.I'm not knocking our armed forces.I dont beleive that our armed forces, or the England football team players are motivated by money when they fight, or play, for their country.
All The Best-Marky :)
Well said, Marky. 8)
btw, I used the wrong word when I wrote 'squeal'.....didn't mean it to come out so strongly at all & I've not met a professional soldier who's done anything than accept that the job can include going to war, so I apologise for that.
Lishka
Cheers Lishka,
I wasn't criticizing you or Tim, or anyone else.Just taking part in the forum.I suppose I should be on my plot digging for victory really. :)
All The Best-Marky.
Oooo, we should ALL be on our plots Digging for Victory.....my excuse is that I'm here waiting for two Very Important Overseas phone calls (and getting in training for The Match)......yours? :P ;D
Veg plot is next to house, coffee break.
My veg plot is in my garden .......they're happy there, I'm happy here ;D
Worth his money, then??
!!
I know if my company were paying that vast amount of money a week they would be wanting better performance out of me!! I'm sure I would be sacked if my performance was doubtful for just 90Min's!
Still I hope we win the world cup...I have drawn England in the sweep stake ;D
Matt
Talking about being on the plot digging for victory, there was a lovely story on local teletext last week about a 90 odd year old lady who has worked the same allotment in Plymouth since she took up the spade during the war.
Wonderful story.
