Title: Mange tout or not??
Post by: Chrissie on June 23, 2006, 10:20:59
Hi everyone - my first sowing of mange-tout peas was demolished by pigeons (my fault for not netting in time) and the second lot must have gone the wrong way - or more likely been eaten by mice! Someone's just given me a packet of Kelvedon Wonder so I've put these in, netted them and crossed my fingers.

Anyway to get to the point - I know K W is an ordinary pea but is there any reason why I shouldn't pick them early and eat the pod as well? ??? (That's if they actually grow of course!) We love stir-fries and that was the main reason for choosing mange-tout in the first place.

most peas can be eaten Mange tout but the parchment forms really quickly in some varieties, I grow Purple Podded, which make very spectacular stir fry but you have to get them in the first couple of days!
;D

I'm growing purple podded and yellow mangetout. The purple is borderline peapod texture, the yellow is sweet and almost melts in the mouth RAW! Guess which gets most space next year? ;)

Thanks for all the info  :). I'll definitely try eating them young and hope they're not too stringy. The yellow ones sound very tempting Supersprout - is there still time to plant them?? Also can you tell me the name of the variety?

I am absolutely delighted with the mange tout we have grown. The crop is just incedible, come back with a bag full every couple of days... they are so tasty too.

Got the seeds in a seed swop - cannot remember who with now - but thank you so much who ever it was!  ;D

Goignt to try some different varieties next year. Yellow sound interesting.
